Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal high court has given an order to the federal government
to fix th prices of goods and petroleum products in Nigeria within a period of seven days. In accordance with the section 4 of the price control act in the Nigerian constitution.Justice Lewis-Allagoa who made the declaration while delivering judgement on a suit filled by human rights lawyer Femi falana (SAN), against the price control board, and the attorney general of the Federation (AGF), ordered the government to fix high cost of goods in the country and services.
The Judge specifically directed the government to fix prices of flour, sugar, salt, matches, milk,bicycle and their spare parts, motorcycle and their spare parts, motor vehicles and their spare parts, and also he directed to government to fix pricea of other petroleum products such as, diesel, kerosene, cooking gas, and petrol motor spirit (PMS).
The court granted all the relief sought by the lawyer Femi falana (SAN), following the failure of the defendant to respond to the suit after they were served by the appellant.
Falana Femi had asked the court to determine whether, by section 4 of the price control act, the first defendant (Price control board) is carrying out it's duties to impose price of goods of any kind specified in the first schedule to the price control act.
The lawyer also urged the court for a declaration that by virtue of the section 4 of the price control act cap, the defendants are under a legal obligation to fix the prices of milk, bicycle and their spare parts, flour, matches, bicycle and their spare parts, motor cycle and their spare parts, motor vehicles and their spare parts, including other petroleum products like, diesel, kerosene, cooking gas, and petrol motor spirit (PMS).
