Residents of Borno State has reported to either trekking, or moving around with horses, and Bicycles amid the hike in price of fuel.
On Tuesday, September 3rd 2024. The pump price for NNPC filling stations increased from N617 to N855 per litre, with the prices varying across location.
Following the Nation's increase in fuel price, many residents of Borno State, business men, workers, including business men has dropped their vehicles.
According to reports on Thursday 5th September 2024. There were less vehicles on the road with more of pedestrians, including horse and Bicycle riders on Major roads.
One of the Pedestrian who happens to be a graphic designer, complained bitterly about the hike in the price of fuel. He said, "This increase in price of fuel really affected me badly, I am a graphic designer, and you know we depend on electricity to do our work, now that we depend solely on fuel to do our work, it means I would have to charge my customers more, as we speak, I am left with no other option. This is not going to be good for business.
A woman who works with a Non-Governmental Organisation also revealed that she now cuts her journey, that she normally treks to some point before entering a bus, or tricycle to get to her destination. "It hasn't been easy since the increase in price of fuel, because I know go late for work almost everyday, I stand up to 10 to 30 minutes before seeing a tricycle that's going towards my location because many riders has packed thei tricycle due to the increase in fuel price." The woman said.
Another resident who is a retired custom officer lamented that he has now parked his vehicle for commercial tricycles.
He also stated that "The government is really confusing us with this fuel subsidy and availability, today you here one story, tomorrow you here another different story. So I have parked my car for a while now."
Another member of an NGO said "Since I came to Maiduguri, I have never for one day parked my car and go out, but today I am doing so because if I move that car, I am going to push it back home, N5000 fuel cannot do me for a day, and were will I be getting such amounts from".
