The Lagos state commissioner for health Prof Abayomi Akin has disclosed that the state is running shortage of medical practitioners i n the healthcare system.
Speaking on Wednesday 10th of July, 2024 at the clean-Air forum in the state, Akin stated that the state is running short of 30,000 medical professionals needed to meet it's health care demands. This deficits has led to an over Stressed and overworked workforce struggling to balance ratio of medical professionals-to-patients.
"The dearth of medical doctors in Lagos has overstretched the available officials. Making it difficult to bridge the gap between doctor-to-patient ratio. Brain drain has significantly contributed to this personnel deficit", the commissioner said.
Aboyomi Akin emphasised the urgency of inter-agency collaborations to address the issue, highlighting the state's need for more medical practitioners to carter for its rapidly growing population.
"The state annual growth of 6-8% poses significant challenges including a complex tuberculosis index, which we are actively working to address", the commissioner stated.
The commissioner also stressed the importance of air quality and need for collaboration from various agencies to put efforts in stopping environmental pollution.
" We will always support every effort to improve air quality, reduce airborne and waterborne diseases, and enhance the health and well-being of residents", he assured.
Addressing concern about the shortage in the health care system in the state Abayomi said, " we are working to address the issue by constructing establishing a medical research institution, and constructing modern facilities, which will bridge the gap within 18 months and provide improved services to the public ".
