Burkina Faso has taken a significant step ahead to foster innovation and the realization of its
ambitious goals with the commencement of its first satellite, Burkinasat-1.This Earth Observation nanosatellite is set to transform lives of citizens of the nation by offering new opportunities for technological connectivity and advancement.The Burkinasat-1 project which was led by Prof. Outtara Federic, a renowned space scientist and Chancellor of Nobert-Zongo University,marks a milestone in the country's Journey towards becoming a space fairing nation. The satellite is said to be constructed locally at Nobert-Zongo university, utilising for both in the country and also for Burkinabes in diaspora. President Christian Kabore Marc Roch announced the start of the construction phase, following the successful completion of the ground station, the first phase of the project.
The Burkina Faso's government has committed about 110 million FCFA which is Approximately (200,000 USD) to fund the procurement of components of the satellite,with future phases, including the satellites launch and operationalization, which is expected to require an additional amount of about 350-400 million FCFA (Approximately 640-740,000 USDollars), President Kabore expressed optimism about the satellites potential in remote sensing, research and development, and also disaster prevention.
Prof. Outtarra, who secured the government's commitment to the project in the year 2019, emphasised on the strategic importance of Burkinasat-1 for the Nation's food security, disaster management, and overall scientific advancement. The project has gotten strong support from scientific community and the Burkina Faso government, with Prof.Outtara's team being bolstered by experts from the country's Meteorology and Energy Research laboratory (LAREME) and skilled professionals from the diaspora.
Professor Alkasoum Maiga,The Burkina Faso's Minister of scientific research, underscored the importance of the project, stating, "Burkina Faso is proud of what has been done, if there's any project that is to be moved forward, it is this one. It is of strategic interest; if only for our food security, to prevent diseases and certain disasters. We bet on the right horse."
As Burkina Faso embarks on the ground breaking satellite project, the country stands on the verge of significant scientific, and technological advancements that promise to improve communication, education, and development, while also bolstering national security efforts against ongoing insurgency.
