The Wild life and forestry in Borno ministry of environment revealed a herd of elephants from
neighbouring country Cameroon has invaded some communities in Borno state and destroyed their farmlands.A director in the ministry, Ayuba Peter, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News men in Maiduguri on Monday, 9th September 2024.
Ayuba stated that the incident had become perennial for the past five years in that area.
He said, " We have been getting reports of elephants destroying farmlands in Gamboru/Ngala and Kala-Balge Local government Area's for the past five years now".
"They used to come from a forest reserve in the neighbouring Cameroon republic at this time, and roam around while destroying farmlands, until flood water recedes around December."
He further stated that the menace has been reported to the federal government through the National park for immediate intervention.
Ayuba Peter also revealed that efforts by the ministry was being frustrated by flooding, coupled with insecurity in the border communities.
He also appealed to Non governmental organisations, to also help in resolving this kind of issues, and he also appealed to the government also to provide financial supports for farmers whose farmlands were affected.
