At least 20 Kano state candidates aspiring elective positions in the upcoming local government elections in the state, have tested positive to multiple drug tests.

The Commander of the National Drug Law enforcement agency (NDLEA) in Kano State, Idris Abubakar, revealed this to daily trust on Tuesday 10th September 2024.

He stated that some of the aspirants tested positive for drugs opioid (codeine), an active ingredient for cannabis sativa THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol ), nicotine and benzodiazenpines.

"So far, about twenty aspirants that were presented to us by NNPP, which is the ruling party, tested positive for multiple drug tests and the exercise is ongoing", Idris said.

" Many of them tested positive for Nicotine, as far as our tests is concerned, but it's left for the electoral commission to decide if tobacco is also drugs, because it's something that is commonly found even in kola nuts".

He also revealed that no female aspirant tested positive so far, as the test is still ongoing.

He explained that it was only the NNPP that has presented their candidates so far, for drug tests and screening ahead of submission of it's candidate to the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).
