The 2024 men's ballon d'or was released on Wednesday, September 4th 2024, and neither Messi nor Ronaldo was featured on the list, for the first time since the year 2003.
The omission of Messi who won his eight ballon d'or in 2022, and Rinaldo who is a five time winner of the ballon d'or awards respectively, signals the end of an era. The two super star football players, dominated the award from 2008 to 2018, with no other player claiming the prize until Modric broke the streak in 2019.
The two players have since moved out of the European football, with Rinaldo now playing for the Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, and Messi now playing for Inter Miami in major league soccer.
The main award is set to be held on October 28th 2024 at the ' Thèâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France.
